After shooting the upcoming “Chop & Brew – Episode 31: P. Berry’s Batch 1,000” P. Berry was kind enough to share his recipes for this partial mash homebrews – Batch 1,000 and Batch 1,002 – for anyone who was interested in trying them at home. Cheers, P. Berry!
Batch 1000: California Blonde
SG: 1.078
FG: 1.018
Approx ABV: 7.9%
P. Berry originally brewed this beer Nov. 24, 2013 and bottled Dec 15, 2013
Grains (steeped in three gallons 150F water for 30 minutes)
2 lbs Pale Ale
0.5 lb Crystal 20 L
0.5 lb Carapils
Remove grains. Stir in malt extract.
Malt Extract:
7 lb Extra Pale LME
3 lb Extra Light DME
Bring to a boil. Add hops.
Hops:
2 oz Columbus (17%AA) @ 60 min
2 oz Cascade (6.9%AA) @ 10 min
Chill wort with ice bath (the P. Berry way!) or with immersion chiller to mid-60s. Pitch yeast.
Yeast:
White Labs 001 California Ale
Replaced the caramunich with 20l, less 2 lb lme and used California ale.
You can see 1000 was a bit stronger than 1002. Even though 1000’s SG and FG were lower, it finished out a few points lower at about .3% higher!
