In this episode, Elsa and Mommers reveal some of their family’s secret tips and techniques for making a perfect pie crust and filling from scratch.     Just watched this recipe with my wife. Super fun and informative episode. I’d score this as the best Chop-centric episode to date. And the others haven’t been too shabby, either.

    We’ll definitely have to try that crust recipe/method. And I love the improvisatory approach to making the filling.

    Home made pie is the best pie! As a kid, we had neighborhood watch over an apple tree in my friend’s yard to defend against squirrels so his mom could make pie with them. And I have made pie from fresh pumpkin on a few occasions- hands down the best pumpkin pie I’ve ever had. Unfortunately, I come a from a family that doesn’t have many handed down recipes, but I’ll be sure to give this one a try.

    So I gave this method a whirl and failed miserably. After combining the shortening and flour, my mixture looked nothing like the video and I was able to make something that could be rolled out into a crust with basically no chilled water. The crusts turned out very “mealy”, and fell apart into something that was closer to Apple Crisp in the end. Since the crust recipe was so simple, the only thing I could attribute this to was the fact my wife suggested using butter flavored shortening instead of standard. Of course, this created some friction as she suggested it may have stemmed from the fact that this was my first attempt ever at making homemade pie. As a man, refusing to accept her argument, I revisited my ingredients. After some digging, I found that the container that is normally filled with white flour had in fact(unbeknownst to me)been filled with wheat flour. I remember your mother-in-law suggesting this would result is “plate tectonics in a pan” and it was precisely that. I plan to give this a second try for a New Years party. Thanks for posting this video. I’ve never been much of a baker, but this gave me some inspiration.

    Would Mommers adjust the crust bake (time, temp?) if regular old metal pie tins be used in place of acorn-adorned ceramic pie plates of awesomeness? .. What about glass ones? Thanks again, gang, for these super professional videos–always entertaining!
